Description

This course addresses everyone interested in the use of computational optimization and mathematical programming in concrete applications from practice, in particular advanced masters students, PhD students, and post-docs.

Short Summary

In irregular intervals of 3-5 years, TU Berlin creates this 2-week intensive workshop.

You can find videos and slides grouped by topics on the website and on the Youtube channel the recordings of the lectures.

The first week starts with a basic review of the simplex method and interior point methods for LP. It is followed by a deep-dive in the techniques and bag of tricks of mixed-integer programming (MIP).

Toward the second week, advanced topics are presented by researchers and companies at the top of their respective fields. These include integrating ML and Optimization, decomposition techniques, using commercial and open-source solvers; applications such as transportation on street, rails, water, and in the air; energy and water supply; and some insights into industrial practise.

When & Why?

The large majority of the videos is great when watched in isolation. However, there is an additional benefit to following along for longer, as each workshop has a well-developed storyline.

How to?

Watch the videos, review what you understood using the slides (e.g. by making a summary in your own words), then replay parts that answer what's unclear.

If questions are not resolved, reach out to the presenters, many of them are academics or practitioners that can be found on Social Media and/or by Googling them and they will be happy to answer any well thought-through follow-ups you ask them.

Review: what is good & less good?

The material on this channel shines with technical depth. Not suitable for beginners, but incredible useful skill-boost for intermediates. Some videos have suboptimal audio quality at times.
